I mean, yeah, there is sometimes a “spray” of sparks, but “Spray Arc” is also a type of welding.
The extra big sparky welding is usually GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), also sometimes called MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. It’s the kind with a gun that shoots wire out of it.
This can work two basic ways.
One way is called Short Circuit, wherein the wire moves forward, connects with the workpiece, melts and pops like a breaking lightbulb, and then repeats that cycle many times a second. This is often described as sounding like bacon frying, but it’s really the sound of hundreds of lightbulbs breaking every second.
The other way is called Spray Arc. If you have a high with voltage and a stable arc, you can actually maintain that arc, and the wire will actually disintegrate into tiny droplets that ‘spray’ across into the weld.
