“Reflecting on the rise of Mussolini fascism around him, Gramsci theorized a “crisis of hegemony” as a moment when, as Ganz quotes in his book, “the great masses have become detached from their traditional ideologies and no longer believe what they used to believe previously.” Following Gramsci, Ganz diagnoses that “the sudden loss of faith and credit in the American system was the acute onset of just such a crisis of hegemony.” The majority of the electorate had bought into Reaganism. But instead of wealth and triumph, it had brought societal and economic devastation – “it left the country battered productively and rudderless ideologically,” Ganz argues. When the Clock Broke certainly makes an excellent case that America in the early 1990s was, to use Gramsci’s term, stuck in such an “interregnum,” famously the time for monsters, when “a great variety of morbid symptoms appear” and dangerously charismatic “men of destiny” rise.”
Nobody remembers how hard the internet made fun of the original Xbox. The moment it was revealed it was heckled for its name, its huge size, its unwieldy looking controller, excessive number of buttons, the entire fact Microsoft was trying to enter the console gaming battlefield, when it actually sold well everyone I knew was incredulous because consensus was that the Xbox was stupid and laughable.
I’ve never had an Xbox system and have no strong opinion on it but this reaction is still so fresh in my mind. I swear there were countless memes about the console being TOO BIG and most of them are gone without a trace. I was there! I was there when the Xbox was TOO BIG!!! There are still a couple of the memes left!
People say “You have to draw the line somewhere, and Biden has crossed it-” and my response is “Trump has crossed way more lines than Biden”.
These categories are based off of actual policy enacted by both of these men while they were in office.
If the ONLY LINE YOU CARE ABOUT is line 12, you have an incredible amount of privilege, AND YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT PALESTINIANS. You obviously have nothing to fear from a Trump presidency, and you do not give a fuck if a ceasefire actually occurs. You are obviously fine if your queer, disabled, and marginalized loved ones are hurt. You clearly don’t care about the status of American democracy, which Trump has openly stated he plans to destroy on day 1 he is in office.
if you want to vote for a third party, what you are going to do is vote for biden in november 2024 and then as soon as that’s done, start trying to get ranked choice voting in your state
we will ALWAYS be a two party system until voting reform happens, and voting reform won’t happen if project 2025 happens.
suck it up and vote biden, then put the next four years to good use
This is a vintage postcard from my collection that I bought because I loved the image so much and the man looked so kind. It was only later that I was able to find out the story behind it: link.
the real danger of spending too much time with friends is you stumble out of ten days of happiness and good food like oh my god THAT was real life. my job means NOTHING
my existentialism professor once showed us this meme and then said softly “reintarnation” and started laughing for about 5 minutes straight but he was laughing so softly we thought he was crying and didn’t know what to do about it
